The Minister for Sport, Tourism, Heritage and Civil Society, Stuart Andrew MP, was keen to see what we’re up to at Palace for Life, so came a visited one of our Chances sessions at Selhurst Park.
Chances is a programme that we run in south London, specifically Stockwell, Norwood, and Brixton, aimed at 10-17-year-olds. The programme focuses on engaging children and young people by using sport and other activities to help them to reengage with education, employment and other positive pathways.
The group taking part in this specific session were years 9 and 10, who attend Lilian Baylis in Kennington. During the module, Stuart Andrew MP discussed the art of public speaking with the students – sharing everything from insights and tips on effective communication, emphasising the significance of public speaking skills in political and social contexts.
Stuart spoke about his own experiences of public speaking, which helped encourage the students to feel confident to actively participate in public conversations and to advocate for causes they care about.
Keia Blake, Education, Employability and Training Officer said:
“Stuart Andrew MP really gave the students a boost, encouraging them to face their fears head-on and speak up with confidence. It was great to see how the interaction between young people and an MP showed just how useful public speaking can be for driving change, and making a real impact in our society.”
