Palace for Life's Summer University is back for 2022! Young people between the ages of 14-24 can apply now to our training and employability programme to help gain employment skills, enhance their CV and gain valuable life experience. Take a look at what's on and register your interest below.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 2-Day Course (14+)


MHFA courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18. They will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. But more than that, we aim to give you the information and skills to look after your own mental health so that you can set an example for young people. By giving you the tools to have these conversations, we hope to empower you to create a mentally healthy, supportive environment in your family, school, peer group or community.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) (16+)


The industry-leading lifeguard qualification teaches you the necessary skills to work as a pool lifeguard. The course runs over five days and includes practical and theory sessions, which are assessed throughout the course by the tutor and by an independent external assessor on the final day of the course. To enrol on this course, candidates must be able to swim 25 metres in 30 seconds and will be required to take part in a swim test before the first day of the course.

*There are limited spaces on this course therefore priority will go to those who are not in employment, education or training

Paediatric First Aid (14+)


Paediatric First Aid training course will teach those who work with infants or children how to deliver paediatric first aid assistance in an emergency. It covers a variety of fundamental first aid topics, including the law surrounding first aid, how to carry out primary and secondary surveys, how to put children and infants into the recovery position, how to administer life-saving CPR, and how to aid with a variety of injuries and illnesses.

Industry Trips (16+)

An opportunity to get exposure into some of the biggest companies in the world including ASOS and Innocent Smoothies, you will get the chance to have a VIP tour of headquarters, meet current staff and recruitment teams, get insider tips and potential employment opportunities. The day will include some fun activities and maybe some goodies too!

DJ Masterclass Workshop (14+)

Young people with a passion for music will learn on deck skills like switching and mixing music as well as mic work and adding effects. Not only that, they will learn about the equipment that they are using but also learn how to set up, an often-overlooked skill. There is opportunity to continue your DJ skills through further work experience with Tons of Sound.

Kick off to Coaching Course (15+)


This course is imperative if you have an interest in coaching football either as career or in a voluntary capacity. With the FA Level 1 moving online this course will cover theory related to coaching young players, define the role of a coach and how to set up warms-up. The practical element of the course will give learners hands-on experience and will cover aspects such as planning and preparation of coaching sessions, sessions outcomes and coaching techniques.

*Learners must be at least 15 years-old to participant on the course

Sports Leaders (14+)

This course aims to develop confident, healthy leaders through sport and physical activity.
Young people undertaking a qualification in Sports Leadership will learn and demonstrate important life skills such as effective communication and organisation whilst learning to lead basic physical activities to younger people, their peers, older generations and within the community. The course involves both guided & peer-to-peer learning and supervised leadership to ensure that learners have all the skills they need to lead basic physical activities to other people.

Time to Grind – Video Production

Young people will have the opportunity to plan and create video content by thinking creatively of a mini documentary topic. Planning and structuring their documentary young people will be put into groups and learn interview techniques and put together questions  ready to capture footage and content. Lastly the will be shown techniques to edit and put together their content, as well as seeing the finished product they will have an opportunity to discuss their inspirations and the journey they have undergone and what pathways are available after the workshop.
