Prudential RideLondon Blog: Stephen Barton

We spoke to Palace fan Stephen Barton who is riding the Prudential RideLondon to raise money for Palace for Life.

“If I’m honest I haven’t found the training for RideLondon too bad as I ride 40 miles most days as I commute by bicycle. I’ve added in a few gym sessions and longer training rides on the fitness gym bike and out on the road to try and get my mileage up for the big day.

I did stall a bit with training when my bicycle got stolen a couple of months ago, but am back in the rhythm now with a new bike. I would like to say I’ve been really good and cut down on my cake and biscuit consumption, but that would be a lie! My wife made a beautiful apple cake the other day, I mean I can’t let her down and not have a few slices can I!?

I’m really looking forward to the day, and having run a few marathons in London when I was younger, I’m hoping for a similar supportive atmosphere and camaraderie among fellow riders. I’ll be really proud to represent and wear the Palace colours on the day too, so can’t wait to get this new kit for sure!

I had always thought about taking on RideLondon as I cycle most days but 100 miles seems like a long, long way to me. However when I saw the chance to ride for the Foundation and help to raise money and awareness in support of the work they do, it made the decision to finally take the plunge an easy(ish) one.  I did the Marathon March last year and have had the privilege to spend a day with the team who do such great work behind the scenes and in the community, helping to change people’s lives in South London.

Every supporter of the club should want to be a part of this by actively getting involved or sponsoring someone fundraising for the Foundation, it’s just a natural extension of being a Palace fan if you really believe in our slogan: South London and Proud.”
