Young South Londoners play on the pitch at Selhurst Park

Last week, more than 20 schools from across South London joined us at Selhurst Park for a day of football on a pitch that made history this season.

Pupils from both primary and secondary schools took part in a range of skill-based games and tournaments on the same pitch where Crystal Palace’s home games are played last week. They also enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, including a visit to the home changing rooms and a look inside manager Oliver Glasner’s office, a first for many who came along!

The afternoon brought together participants from beyond our school’s programmes when our refugee and community team went up against plyers from our one of our mental health support sessions.

Luke Hirst, Head of Football Development and Primary Education at Palace for Life, said:

“Play on the Pitch is more than just a game of football, it’s a special opportunity for young people in South London to experience what it’s like to walk out onto the Selhurst Park pitch. For many of the young people involved, it’s their first time visiting the stadium, so we hope it was a memorable day for them.

As well as enjoying football, the event helps build confidence, teamwork and a sense of belonging to the South London and Crystal Palace community. Welcoming pupils from 22 primary and secondary schools reflects our aim to reach as many young people as we can, using the power of Palace to support and connect our community.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us – we hope it’s one they’ll remember for a long time.
