"This FA Cup victory gives us a rare opportunity and a big responsibility” – CEO Mike Summers’ reflections on FA Cup victory

Palace for Life CEO Mike Summers reflects on a historical moment in Crystal Palace history.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and that the scale of our FA Cup win is beginning to sink in. For me, it was an unforgettable experience. I shed a few tears and shared hugs with friends and strangers alike. It was also fantastic to bump into so many people connected to the club and the Foundation – staff, PlayMakers, donors, and familiar faces from our Marathon Marches and bike rides over the years.

One particularly special moment was seeing Coach Michael Lacey walk out with the FA Cup trophy ahead of the game. As our longest-serving employee and a lifelong Palace fan, it was a proud and fitting way to recognise his contribution to Palace for Life since 1999. It was a no-brainer to nominate him, and he represented all of us so well on that pitch.

This FA Cup victory will really change things up for us all at Palace for Life. It gives us a rare opportunity, and a big responsibility, to build on this magical moment.

Saturday’s win will inspire a new generation of Crystal Palace fans, and we’ll be working hard to channel that energy into our programmes in schools and across the community. We’ve always known how powerful the Palace badge can be when it comes to reaching young people, especially those who may not connect with teachers, social workers or the police. Now, with the spotlight on us like never before, we have an even greater chance to engage, support and uplift more young people through our life-changing work.

Schools in Croydon and beyond turned red and blue on Friday to show support for Crystal Palace

The months ahead will look a little different for us all at Selhurst Park, starting with a trip to Wembley in August for the Community Shield against Liverpool. Then it’s eight Europa League matches through the autumn – and who knows, perhaps a real shot at the Europa League trophy itself.  After all, Oliver Glasner won it back in 2022 with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Amid all the celebrations, it’s important to pause and reflect. For many, Saturday’s joy was tinged with sadness as we remembered those we’ve lost – people who would have loved to witness this historic moment. Their absence was deeply felt.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Palace for Life. This is a truly special time in the club’s history, and together we have a chance to make an even greater impact in South London.
